RUGBY UNION – Alcester earn final day win at Old Leamingtonians with last gasp try
REPLACEMENT prop Dev Jacobs scored a try at the death to earn Alcester a dramatic 26-24 victory against Old Leamingtonians.
Jacobs scored his first Alcester try as the club secured their highest-ever finish in the RFU league structure.
The result means Alcester end the Counties 1 Midlands West (South) season in second place with 16 wins from 22 matches.
Old Leamingtonians scored the game’s first try at the Crofts following a quick dart from the base of a scrum.
Alcester responded on the stroke of half time as Josh O’Connor powered over and Ed Gough converted to put the visitors into a two-point lead at the break.
The home side reclaimed the lead five minutes into the second half before the hosts lost a player to the sin-bin for a high tackle.
Alcester took full advantage of the extra player as Jack Green scored a carbon copy of the away side’s first try and Gough converted.
However, Green then saw yellow for a high tackle and Old Leamingtonians regained the lead with a converted try.
The lead changed hands again when Jamie Harland crossed for Alcester and Gough converted following a powerful run by prop Ieuan Hopkin.
And the lead changed hands for a seventh time when Old Leamingtonians crossed for a bonus point try with time running out.
However, the hosts lost a player to the sin-bin late on which led to an Alcester penalty as Jacobs pounced to score the match-winning try.
