Over 1500 children have already signed up for Worcestershire’s Summer Reading Challenge

RUNNING from September 4 to 12 , the challenge invites children aged four to 11 to discover the joy of reading through this year’s Read to the Beat theme, celebrating the connection between music and books.

Books, eBooks, audiobooks and eAudiobooks are all free to borrow from Worcestershire libraries.

Part of the National Year of Reading, the challenge is created by The Reading Agency and delivered by Worcestershire County Council’s Library Service.

It’s free to join at any library and offers plenty of rewards, including medals, certificates and free entry to National Trust’s The Firs for children who reach key milestones.

More than 185 young volunteers have also signed up to support the challenge, demonstrating the enthusiasm it has generated across the county.

Coun Josh Robinson, cabinet member for environment and communities at Worcestershire County Council said: “It’s fantastic to see so many children signing up in the very first week.

How the Summer Reading Challenge Works:

• Children sign up at their local library to start their challenge.
• They choose the books they want to read – any titles that spark their imagination.
• Library staff and volunteers are on hand to chat about the books and share recommendations.
• Rewards and incentives encourage progress – including free admission to National Trust Croome for reading four books.

Children who complete the challenge (by reading six library books) receive a medal and certificate.
