New nature reserve opened at Abbeywood First School in Redditch

A NEW nature reserve, created through a community volunteering project, has opened at Abbeywood First School in Redditch.

The outdoor learning space was delivered by David Wilson Homes and will give pupils the opportunity to study wildlife, biodiversity and the natural environment as part of their education.

The nature reserve will form a core part of the school’s outdoor learning activities, offering pupils an interactive area to study local wildlife and habitats throughout the academic year.

Redditch MP Chris Bloore opened the nature reserve, alongside head of school Zoe Gilmour and representatives from David Wilson Homes, including Development Director Andrew Dauncey, head of technical Edward Bate and technical secretary Jenny Chandler.

He toured the new reserve and heard about the project before joining pupils and representatives for the official opening.

Mr Bloore said: “Projects like this show what can be achieved when schools and local businesses work together for the benefit of young people.

“This will be a valuable resource. It allows pupils to learn outside the classroom. It helps them develop an appreciation for nature.

“Access to green spaces and outdoor learning is important for children’s education and wellbeing.

“Experiences like these help inspire curiosity.

“They encourage the next generation to become good custodians of our natural environment.
