FOOTBALL – Alvechurch slip to defeat away at Bishop’s Stortford
ALVECHURCH failed to move clear of danger following a 2-0 defeat away at Bishop’s Stortford.
Goals either side of half time from Aaron Greene and Brad Russell condemned Church to defeat at Woodside Park.
The result means Alvechurch sit 16th in the Southern League Premier Central table, three points clear of the relegation zone.
Church almost took the lead when debutant Callum Powell rounded the goalkeeper only for Jake Thompson to clear the shot off the line.
However, Bishop’s Stortford broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when Greene fired into the roof of the net from 10-yards out after Redman Evans kept out Frank Norris’s close-range header.
The home side hit the post shortly before half time as Norris’s improvised flick struck the woodwork and bounced to safety.
And Bishop’s Stortford doubled their lead on 66 minutes when Russell finished from close range after Church blocked Cole Dasilva’s effort on the line.
The visitors almost halved the deficit late on only for Josh Dugmore to see his effort tipped onto the post by home goalkeeper Adam Hayton.
Alvechurch are next in action against Stamford on Tuesday, March 17 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Lye Meadow.
