National Grid Proposes 30m Communication Tower In Redditch
National Grid has submitted a planning application to Redditch Borough Council for the installation of a 30-meter communication tower at the existing substation in Headless Cross. National Grid tell us this development aims to enhance the security and efficiency of the electricity distribution network in Redditch and the surrounding areas.
Purpose and Specifications of the Proposed Tower
The proposed mast is designed to be an integral part of a high-speed communications network, facilitating real-time monitoring, fault detection, and communication with National Grid’s control centre. This infrastructure is essential for promptly addressing power supply issues and ensuring the safety and reliability of electricity distribution.
Standing at 30 meters, the tower’s height is necessary to ensure clear and unobstructed signals, eliminating potential interference from trees, buildings, and other structures. The design incorporates a slender, see-through structure to minimize visual impact on the surrounding area.
Site Selection and Environmental Considerations
The chosen location within the existing substation site allows for improved connectivity with National Grid’s assets while maintaining the visual appearance across the wider region. This approach also reduces the ecological footprint compared to alternative locations that would have required additional overhead lines.
National Grid has confirmed that the installation will adhere to the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines on public exposure, with certification provided to the local authority as part of the application.
A spokesperson for National Grid Electricity Distribution stated:
“We are currently engaging in the planning process with Redditch Borough Council on the proposed development of a communications tower at an existing substation in Redditch. While the proposal has been developed to minimise visual and ecological impact, we are always committed to listening to public feedback as we seek to enhance the safety and security of the distribution of electricity in the region.
This initiative underscores National Grid’s commitment to maintaining a robust and up-to-date communications network, essential for the effective management of the region’s electricity supply.”
Residents and interested parties are encouraged to participate in the consultation process. Details of the planning application can be accessed through Redditch Borough Council’s planning portal, allowing the community to review the proposal and submit feedback.
The council will consider all representations before making a decision on the application.
