Worcestershire has a new High Sheriff

FORMER solicitor, Maynard Burton, has been appointed as the new High Sheriff of Worcestershire, writes Zaynab Hamdy.

The 69-year-old was welcomed at a special ceremony at Worcester’s Shirehall last Wednesday.

Through his role, Mr Burton, who has lived in Stourport-on-Severn for almost 60 years, plans to work closely with schools and reformed offenders, including children who were in care, to provide them with greater opportunities.

Mr Burton has also announced plans to develop links with St John Ambulance, where he will appoint two cadets as High Sheriff Cadets for the year.

And he plans to continue the successful ‘Getting Court’ scheme. The educational project, championed by various High Sheriffs in England and Wales, is designed to give school students – aged between 14 and 18 – first-hand experience of the criminal justice system.

In 2022, Mr Burton was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Worcestershire Law Society and, in 2023, he retired from MFG Solicitors, where he was a partner and chairman for more than 40 years.

He has also played a key role as a trustee for a number of charities including The Mackaness Trust. And he is a former chair and president of Stourport Tennis and Squash Club where he has been a member for almost 60 years.

He replaces Ian Smith, who stands down after a very successful year as High Sheriff.

The declaration was presided over by The Rt Hon Mr Justice Choudhury.

Mr Burton said: “First and foremost, it’s a great honour to be appointed as High Sheriff of Worcestershire – this role has historic roots stretching more than a thousand years and is a direct appointment by His Majesty The King,

“I will focus on providing support and encouragement to the offices and agencies of law and order, the emergency services, local authorities and the voluntary sector.”

And he vowed to continue the outstanding work of those who had held the title before him.

“During my year in office, I also plan to shine a light on those who work with young people and celebrate the service and contribution of the extraordinary unsung heroes across the county.”
