Minster confirms transition funding to be provided for council workers following LGR decision after Redditch MP Commons questions

REDDITCH MP Chris Bloore has asked the former Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Steve Reed to ensure staff working across the existing borough and district councils across Worcestershire will be supported.

The Government announced a fortnight ago there should be new North and South Worcestershire unitary councils, with Redditch, Bromsgrove and Wyre Forest in the North and Malvern, Worcester and Wychavon in the South.

The proposal will see the new authorities become operational from April 2028.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Bloore said: “This will not be an easy time for staff in those seven affected councils.

“Can the Minister assure me the Government will provide the money and support needed to make this transition a success?”

Responding, Mr Reed commended the cross-party consensus behind the proposal.

He confirmed transition funding would be provided to protect vital public services, particularly those supporting vulnerable residents, as the new unitary authorities prepare to take over responsibility.

Following the debate, Mr Bloore added: “This is a significant moment for Redditch and the wider county.

“For too long, our town has lacked the strategic economic leadership needed to unlock investment, create better-paid jobs and realise our full potential.

“A North Worcestershire unitary authority gives us the opportunity to build a council that better reflects the communities it serves.

“It will work more closely with local businesses.

“It will deliver the economic vision Redditch has been crying out for.

“I am particularly pleased this proposal secured broad cross-party backing across Worcestershire.

“It demonstrates local leaders were able to come together in the best interests of residents.”
